The purpose of this article is to apply a grammar of socio-political designations (Tournier, 1981)
to political parties in the archipelago of Comoros during the second half of the twentieth century. During
colonization, the only opposition was between the Green and the White, until decolonization leads to
separatist political parties such MOLINACO, PSLC, PASOCO or ASEC. Finally, the unilateral independence
declared in 1975 is refused by Mayotte which political life starts differing, focussing around UDIM and then
MPM which male members were called soldiers and female ‘ticklishers’, struggling for Mayotte to remain
French whereas ‘hand-shakers’ struggled for Mayotte to join Comoros.
