FEMININE VOICE AND THE IMAGE OF THE ALGERIAN WOMAN THROUGH THE THEME OF CONFINEMENT IN "ESPECIALLY DO NOT RETURN" AND "HIZIYA" BY MAÏSSA BEY AMID TWO WAYS: TRADITION AND MODERNITY
Keywords:
history, tradition, modernity, confinement, the quest of freedom, feminine writingAbstract
In Algerian history, the image of the woman has been that of one governed by the traditional
society, she always lived in silence and the obedience, a weak creature, excluded from any social activity,
imprisoned in a space imposed by Man. This is probably the reason why the Algerian woman imposed herself
and decided to break her silence, revolting to describe her sufferings and thus express her thoughts towards a
quest for freedom through writing in order to build herself a status that has changed with modern society.
Yet one wonders if the woman is able to separate from the trace of her traditional society in her writing, in
other words, it is her past and her experience that pushed her to "unveil" and express herself. Probably the
history that the Algerian woman lived allowed the birth of a feminine post-independence, it is this link that
exists between tradition and modernity that gave birth to Algerian women's writing, starting with Assia
Djebbar in her first novel "La Soif" (Thirst) published in 1958. The problematic of this study is to discover this
entanglement between the past and the present, between tradition and modernity and this link, Maïssa Bey
will enable us to discover through her two novels " Surtout ne te retourne pas " (Do not look back) and
"Hiziya". This study aims to highlight the role of women in Algerian society in particular and to see their
image as a mirror reflecting the life of a society through the theme of confinement.
