written and staged by Wajdi Mouawad, this paper offers a reflection on the way memory (or memories) is represented and staged in the contemporary Francophone Theatre. Starting from an early opposition between a Canadian and Lebanese character, the playwright’s writing and staging choices effectively question how - in a conflictual context, theatre allows alterity and friendship to emerge from the complex notion of “memory”. “Soeurs” also addresses the current fragmentation of world politics and outlines a possible reconciliation between East and West.
