Construction and deconstruction of sexual stereotypes in French-speaking novel
Keywords:
gender stereotypes, libido, fulfillment, characters, sexual liberationAbstract
Stereotypes are as old as mankind and reflect the idea we have of those who are different from us.
This communication aims to analyze the construction and deconstruction of gender stereotypes in some French-
speaking novels. Based on the work of Amossy Ruth, Anne Herschberg Pierrot, Daniel Henri Pageaux on
stereotypes and cliches and on queer theory of Judith Butler, we demonstrate that the sexual practices of the
characters in the novels L’homme qui m’offrait le ciel of Calixthe Beyala, Le mariage de plaisir and Le dernier
ami of Tahar Ben Jelloun, Hôtel plaisir of François Nkeme and Nos baisers sont des adieux of Nina Bouraoui are
subject to stereotypes. The four French-speaking writers lay bare preconceived ideas regarding sexual
orientation and practices of the characters, cliches on the allegued lust of the woman who assumes her sexuality
and about the explosive libido of black women. They seek to deconstruct stereotypes by advocating sexual
agency of female character, while fighting against homophobia, by criticizing social reality and promoting
sexual tolerance. The aim is to promote liberation and the sexual fulfillment of the characters.
