Stereotypes in digital contexts in TED Talks. A socio-ethnographic study of speakers' influences
Keywords:

The present study used the example of a TED knowledge dissemination platform to investigate
online influence in TED Talks as a study context. Our aim was to study how gender- and age-related language
styles in this context can be both carriers and vectors of stereotypes. In collecting the corpus , we collected
transcripts of the lectures as well as their impact measures . We assessed the speakers' language using
linguistic measures adapted to gender and age. The results highlight how verbal behaviour can contribute to
stereotypical evaluations. They also show how, in new digital social contexts, female language can be uniquely
rewarded and thus be an underestimated but highly effective tool of social influence.
