This article aims to reflect on the notion of stereotype and its scope in the literary text and to
clarify its functioning in A Summer of Ashes by Abdelkader Djemaï. This novel presents us with a most
powerful archetype, that of the “infertile woman”. We will focus on the violent aspect of this stereotype and
therefore its power which gives the text its readability. So in what sense does the writer deploy the
stereotype in the text of violence? To do this, we will firstly focus on the aesthetic effects of the stereotype
and then on its enunciative specificity and its role in the cohesion of the literary text and the production of
meaning.
