Nathacha Appanah’s novel Les Rochers de Poudre d’Or (2003) sheds light on the fate of ‘coolies’ within the historical context of Indian indentureship in 19th-century Mauritius. By alternating between diverse voices that share a common fate and employing relevant narrative techniques, the novel powerfully depicts the dehumanization of indentured laborers. While embedding their experience within a duty of memory undertaken by the author, the text raises a central question about the denial of humanity among dominated individuals.
