Can We Truly Welcome Without Truly Translating ? A Study of Machine- Assisted Translation in Tunisian Hospitality

his study examines the impact of machine-assisted translation in the Tunisian hospitality sector, focusing on six hotels in Hammamet where fieldwork was conducted over a three-week period in the summer of 2025. The aim is to determine whether effective hospitality is possible without accurate translation in a context shaped by the linguistic diversity of international clients. The methodology combines on-site observations, semi- structured interviews, and a qualitative analysis of testimonies collected from hotel staff. Findings reveal that while machine translation serves as a useful mediation tool, it remains insufficient to ensure smooth andculturally appropriate communication. Frequent misunderstandings, particularly in sensitive areas such ashealth, food requirements, or politeness, highlight the technical and cultural limitations of these tools. Thestudy confirms that intercultural competence remains an indispensable factor in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of multilingual hospitality services.
