Regarded as one of the major foundations of ordinary language philosophy and the origin of speech act theory, the William James Lectures delivered by John L. Austin (1911–1960) at Harvard University in 1955 have recently been the subject of a new French translation. This version, produced by Bruno Ambroise, was developed on the basis of the second edition of the lectures, edited by J. O. Urmson and Marina Sbisà, and first published in 1975 by Clarendon Press in Oxford. The aim of this new translation is to offer French-speaking readers a more precise and nuanced understanding of the text. This ambition is fully realized in the reading of the volume, thanks both to numerous and pertinent terminological adjustments and to the incorporation of previously unpublished philological data, which allow for a more faithful rendering of John L. Austin’s thought
