Translating law in the digital era

Abstract

The rise of digital technologies has redefined the practices of specialized translation, particularly in the legal field, where precision and rigor are essential. Artificial intelligence provides powerful tools—machine translation, CAT systems, and management platforms—enhancing speed, consistency, and accessibility. Their increasingly widespread use responds to the challenges of globalization and the demand for institutional multilingualism. However, these solutions remain limited by the absence of critical reasoning, confidentiality concerns, and the lack of legal accountability. AI can therefore not replace human expertise, which is
indispensable for grasping the complexity of legal texts and ensuring their reliability. Thus, the future lies in human–machine collaboration, where AI serves as an optimization tool at the service of human expertise.
